- Keep licensing-name approval and trademark review as separate tasks.
- Decide who should own the brand before submitting a filing.
- Review the actual goods, services and marks you plan to use.
Which question does each process answer?
The licensing authority checks the proposed trade name under its naming rules. The Ministry of Economy and Tourism operates the separate trademark registration service. Neither buying a domain nor securing a social handle completes those two processes.
If the company name and product brand differ, put both in the launch brief. Otherwise, a conversation about the legal entity can leave the customer-facing brand out of the review.
What are you trying to protect?
List the word name, logo and goods or services that matter to the business. A designer’s artwork file and a proposed trademark filing are not interchangeable. Ask an appropriate specialist to review the mark, relevant classes and potential conflicts before spending heavily on packaging or signage.
| Item | Separate check |
|---|---|
| Company trade name | Approval through the licensing authority. |
| Product or service brand | Trademark availability and filing scope. |
| Domain and social accounts | Availability, control and access arrangements. |
Who should own the application?
Decide whether the applicant is an individual or company and make sure the decision matches the business arrangement. The Ministry’s service lists different documentation for applicants and agents. Overseas owners may need to use a registered agent and provide the required power of attorney.
This matters when a founder has paid a designer personally but the company will sell the product. Settle ownership and permissions early, including access to source artwork. A shared drive full of logos does not explain who has the rights to use them.
Plan for the whole registration process
Trademark registration involves examination and further steps after acceptance, including publication and an objection period. Do not describe an application receipt as a completed registration. Check current fees and response deadlines directly with the Ministry or your appointed adviser.
Make the checks before the expensive commitments
Keep a short brand decision sheet: proposed owner, exact mark, intended goods or services, searches completed and the next action. Review it before printing a large packaging order. For the licensing-name stage itself, use our trade name reservation checklist.
