Dubai Trade Name Rules: Check Your Name Before You Apply

A Dubai trade name needs authority approval, even if the matching website domain is available. For a DET application, check name availability, restricted wording and whether the name fits your activity. Prepare alternatives before ordering signage or committing to a full brand launch.

In short
  • A free domain or social username does not confirm trade name availability.
  • DET naming rules cover restricted wording, similarity and activity fit.
  • Use the approved spelling consistently across company documents.

Can you use the name you already have?

Check it before treating it as final. A name that works on Instagram may still need changes for a Dubai trade licence. Start with a shortlist of two or three options and check them through the relevant authority. A free zone may apply its own process, so a DET search does not settle every free zone application.

Which DET naming rules matter most?

DET’s trade name reservation guidance addresses offensive or religious wording, restricted names, similarity to existing brands and consistency with the business activity. Personal and family names also have conditions. Read those rules before paying a designer to build around a proposed name.

Ask how the approved name will appear in English and Arabic, including any legal-form wording. Keep a written copy rather than relying on a name spoken during a call.

A short check before you reserve

  1. Confirm the authority that will issue your licence.
  2. Check the proposed name through that authority’s current service.
  3. Check the spelling against your intended activity and legal form.
  4. Ask about reservation validity, renewal and the next application step.
  5. Keep an alternative ready if the authority requests a change.

Domain names, social handles and trademark questions deserve their own checks. Do not read a successful trade name reservation as an answer to every branding or intellectual-property question.

Keep the approved spelling in one place

Create a simple company details sheet with the approved name, legal form and, once issued, licence number. Use it when preparing contracts, invoices and bank applications. Small differences between documents can turn a straightforward request into another round of questions.

What if your first choice is unavailable?

Return to the shortlist before adding random words just to get through the application. The name should still be easy for customers to recognise and accurately describe the business. Confirm the revised option before printing, publishing or buying assets that would be expensive to replace.

Quick answers

Still curious? An adviser can answer anything about your setup.

Ask an adviser
Does buying a domain reserve my company name in Dubai?

No. Domain registration and trade name reservation are separate processes. Check the proposed company name with your licensing authority.

Do Dubai free zones follow the same name approval process as DET?

Not necessarily. Apply through the authority issuing your licence and confirm its naming rules, documents and reservation terms.
