UAE Company Establishment Card: How It Differs From a Licence

A company establishment card relates to the business’s file with the relevant immigration authority. It is different from a trade licence and from an individual’s residence permission. Check the process for your emirate and authority before assuming a licence package includes the complete immigration setup.

In short
  • A licence, company immigration file and personal visa serve different purposes.
  • Check authorised signatories and company details before applying.
  • Track establishment card expiry separately from other company documents.

Why is the trade licence not the same document?

The licence describes the company’s authorised business activity. The establishment card belongs to a different administrative process. An individual visa application is another step again. Keeping those documents separate helps explain why a company can be licensed while its immigration work is still being prepared.

Ask for the official names of the documents in your package. “Immigration included” is not precise enough to tell you which company and individual steps have been paid for.

Which authority handles the application?

For Dubai, GDRFA publishes an establishment card service for private-sector and free zone institutions. Other locations and structures should follow their relevant authority’s process. Your free zone or adviser can explain how company details are submitted and who is authorised to act.

What should you check before submission?

  • The legal company name and current licence details.
  • The partners or shareholder information requested.
  • The identity and authority of the signatory.
  • Any authorisation documents needed for a representative.
  • The exact service charges, validity and next application stage.

Use the current service checklist for the company type. Special categories can have additional requirements; do not copy a document list from an unrelated business.

Does the card approve a founder’s residence visa?

No. The company file and each person’s application have their own requirements. Ask which steps follow, what evidence the applicant needs and whether any stage requires an appointment or physical presence.

Likewise, a card should not be read as unlimited sponsorship capacity. Confirm the company’s allocation and facility conditions before making hiring commitments.

What should happen when company details change?

Ask whether an amendment is needed when the relevant ownership, manager or signatory details change. Keep the current card with the licence and identity records in a secure folder. Record its own expiry date and review it in your renewal calendar. It is easier to prepare an update than discover an expired company document during an urgent application.

Quick answers

Still curious? An adviser can answer anything about your setup.

Ask an adviser
Does a UAE trade licence automatically include an establishment card?

Not necessarily. Check the issuing route and the exact company immigration services included in the package.

Is an establishment card the same as a residence visa?

No. The card concerns the company file; residence permission concerns an individual and requires a separate application and approval.
