Starting a business on a spouse visa in the UAE

If you hold a spouse-sponsored UAE residence visa, review company ownership and work permission separately. A family residence visa does not answer every question about managing or working for a business. The relevant authority should confirm the company requirements, and the appropriate employment route needs its own check.

In short
  • Explain whether you will own, manage or work in the company.
  • Check the company documents for your existing residence status.
  • Confirm the appropriate work permission before providing services.

Which role will you take in the business?

A shareholder funding a company, a manager running it and a person delivering paid client work can have different requirements. Describe your intended role clearly when asking about formation.

Start with the proposed activities, company form and current residence status. Ask the licensing authority for its document checklist, including whether any sponsor-related document is needed for your particular application.

Does family residency also cover the work?

MOHRE has a work permit service for family-sponsored residents within its framework. Check whether that route or another arrangement applies to the role and company you propose.

Free zone and other jurisdictions can have their own employment administration. Do not assume that a permit used by a friend in another company answers your situation. Confirm the process with the body responsible for your employer or business.

What should you compare before paying?

  • The company’s permitted activities and legal form.
  • Your intended ownership, management and working role.
  • Documents required for the existing residence arrangement.
  • Any work authorisation and ongoing employment administration.
  • Workspace, renewal and future staffing costs.

Suppose a family-sponsored resident wants to start a small design studio. The licence discussion should cover the services and company structure. The separate work discussion should cover the person actually delivering the design projects.

Think about what happens if the family visa changes

Ask how a future change or cancellation of the current residence sponsorship would affect the business role and any work authorisation. Keep company contacts and renewal access under appropriate control so a personal change does not leave important notices unattended.

Also consider whether the company may later need to sponsor employees or support a different residence arrangement. Confirm the permitted capacity and costs before assuming an entry package includes those later steps.

Kompani Setup can help organise the company formation comparison around your existing status and plans. Bring a clear description of the services and who will do the work. The relevant authorities should confirm the final requirements for the company and individual.

Quick answers

Still curious? An adviser can answer anything about your setup.

Ask an adviser
Is a spouse visa the same as permission to work?

No. Review the appropriate work authorisation for the role and jurisdiction separately from residence sponsorship.

Will every authority ask for the same sponsor documents?

No universal checklist should be assumed. Confirm the current requirements for the chosen authority, company structure and applicant.
